Your Voice, Your Power: Stop Banks from Fuelling Wildfires

Our banks are financing the climate crisis, and it’s time to act. Digital emails are ignored, but your in-person or handwritten message cannot be.

MP Wade Grant asked our CCL Vancouver group for a one-pager on climate-aligned finance to bring back to his caucus. Here it is: Bilingual Climate Aligned Finance One-Pager.

Time Sensitive Action: We are asking everyone to take action by September 10

  1. Deliver in person: Print our One-Pager and bring it to your MP’s constituency office. Take a picture of yourself with your MP and/or staff when you do it.
  2. Snail mail: Print the One-Pager add a personal note, and mail it.
  3. Call and follow up: Phone your MP’s office, then email the One-Pager.
  4. Scroll down for the scripts in both official languages.
  5. Find your MP’s contact info: Look up by postal code.
Why September 10? MPs will have caucus meetings prior to returning to Parliament. We know that most parliamentarians are unfamiliar with this file. Education of MPs is key for moving policies through Parliament and into Budget 2026.

Track your impact: Help us empower MPs by logging your action here or you can track it in your CCL Action Tracker under “Contact with Legislator“.

Why this works: We’ve lobbied over 40 MPs this year and we have lobbied many times in our 16 years existence. They tell us personal contact stands out. Relationships change minds. Digital campaigns alone won’t cut it. By tracking our work, we show MPs we are serious because highly organized climate advocates get noticed.

Need help? Every Wednesday night on Zoom at 5 pm PT / 8 pm ET we have our Climate Leaders’ Launchpad. For the next three weeks we will be dedicating some of the time of that call to this action. Go here to register. Stay- tuned we will also be scheduling more calls to help you all.

Laser Talk: Progress on Climate Aligned Finance

Progress on the New Climate Aligned Finance Bill

In late October 2025, Senator Rosa Galvez introduced a new and improved Climate-Aligned Finance Act (a.k.a. CAFA or Bill S-238) after the last version died at the end of Parliament. The bill would make banks and Crown corporations create climate action plans and set targets. It would make company leaders responsible for following climate commitments, require climate experts on boards, and make banks hold more reserves if they take bigger climate risks.

With climate change “already starting to wreak havoc on our financial system,” Galvez said in a media release, “CAFA is not radical, it is simply inevitable. It is the next logical step to protect Canadians, our economy, and our climate. Voluntary pledges have failed to shift capital at the scale and speed required.”

The bill “is essential because Canada’s reliance on fossil fuel financing is increasing systemic risk,” she added. “We need structural rules, not wishful thinking.”

The release says the new version of CAFA, Senate Bill S-238, was “strengthened through expert consultations” by removing references to specific capital risk-weights for financing of fossil fuel activities, requiring disclosure but not removal of board members with “climate conflicts,” and “deeming those complying with the new duty to align with climate commitments to carry out their duties under any other enactment.”

Galvez introduced the previous version of CAFA, Bill S-243, on March 24, 2022. It was endorsed by 89 investment firms, academic organizations, and environmental groups, referred to the Senate Committee on Banking, Commerce and the Economy in June, 2023, and finally received a brief hearing the following November. In March, 2024, as supporters marked the bill’s second anniversary with social media posts, a Senate source reported no immediate plans on the part of committee chair Pamela Wallin (CSG-Saskatchewan) to bring the legislation forward for detailed study.

ADDENDUM JANUARY 2026: A January 2026 House of Commons ENVI Committee report recommended moving foward on climate aligned-finance regulations.

ADDENDUM APRIL 21. 2026: Senator MacDonald made an intervention on Bill S238 in the Senate.

ADDENDUM MAY 2026: MP Eric St-Pierre put forth a motion (M-34) on the House of Commons in support of climate aligned finance.
