SUDBURY, ON Robinson-Huron Treaty Territory, September 16, 2026 — With the United Nations Climate Week beginning September 21 and Parliament returning, Citizens’ Climate Lobby Canada is encouraging Canadians to start more informed conversations about climate change by releasing and circulating its new Planetary Boundaries Laser Talk Booklet. The booklet responds to a growing problem: there is no shortage of information about climate change, but finding good, accessible and trustworthy information can be surprisingly difficult. Important research is scattered across scientific papers, government reports and institutional websites. Search engines do not always surface the most authoritative sources, while misinformation, disinformation and the growing volume of AI-generated slop can make it harder for people to know what to trust. “A Member of Parliament recently told us that it is difficult to find reliable information online,” says Cathy Orlando (Sudbury, ON), director of Citizens’ Climate Lobby Canada. “That really resonated with us. We put this booklet together to provide a trusted, accessible source of information that MPs and Canadians can use and share.” September 23 marks 17 years since Nature published the landmark scientific paper “A safe operating space for humanity,” which introduced the planetary boundaries framework to a broad international audience. The framework identified limits on critical Earth-system processes that help maintain conditions in which human societies can thrive. Today, humanity has crossed seven of the nine planetary boundaries, according to the latest assessments of the framework. The booklet examines where we are at, how humanity arrived at this point and what can still be done to create a safer and more prosperous future. The timing is significant. A September 2, 2026 United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) report says exceeding 1.5°C of global warming is now widely assessed as unavoidable. They emphasized that every fraction of a degree matters. The lower we keep the peak and the sooner we bring temperatures back down, the more climate damage we can avoid. The booklet also connects global climate science with Canadians’ everyday experience. Statistics Canada reports that between December 2019 and December 2025, homeowners’ home and mortgage insurance premiums increased 45 per cent, more than twice the inflation rate. The agency identifies growing extreme-weather impacts among the pressures facing insurers. But the booklet is not intended to leave readers in despair, although the section on the Precautionary Principle is certainly not for the faint of heart. Among the good news in the booklet is a September 7 UNEP assessment that provides a striking example of the opportunities available. Its analysis of 25 proven climate and clean-air measures found that every US$1 invested could generate around US$15 in economic benefits. Integrated action could also prevent 144 million premature deaths and hundreds of millions of cases of chronic disease by 2050. UNEP estimates that each year of delay forfeits more than US$1.5 trillion in benefits. Citizens’ Climate Lobby Canada is encouraging Canadians to put the booklet to work: print a copy and send it to your MP, leave one at your local library, share it with a friend or community group, use it when speaking with an elected representative or journalist, or draw on it when writing a letter to the editor. “You don’t need to be a scientist or climate expert,” says Dr. Mary Blake Rose (London, ON), Deputy Project Manager with Citizens’ Climate Lobby Canada. “You just need to be willing to start the conversation.” The organization believes informed conversations can build understanding, challenge misinformation, inspire hope and strengthen the public will for effective climate action.
