This conference is a pivotal moment for global climate action. It follows the launch of the Belém Declaration on the Just Transition Away from Fossil Fuels at COP 30 which has already garnered support from 24 countries. The Declaration sets a bold standard for international ambition, aligning with President Lula’s call for a global roadmap to ensure a just and equitable transition away from fossil fuels.

The Declaration is backed by a diverse coalition, including: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Cambodia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Denmark, Fiji, Finland, Ireland, Jamaica, Kenya, Luxembourg, Marshall Islands, Mexico, Micronesia, Nepal, Netherlands, Panama, Spain, Slovenia, Vanuatu, and Tuvalu.

The conference builds on the success of past diplomatic summits—such as the Ottawa Conference on landmines, the Oslo Conference on cluster munitions, and the Humanitarian Initiative on nuclear weapons—which shifted global discourse and led to transformative international agreements. By participating, Canada can help shape a similar legacy for climate justice.
