For Immediate Release: January 28, 2026 January 28, 2026 – Sudbury ON in Robinson-Huron Treaty Territory – In just ten days, a small but dedicated team of volunteers from Citizens’ Climate Lobby (CCL) Canada collected 886 signatures from across the country on an open letter to the Senate urging swift passage of the Climate-Aligned Finance Act (CAFA, Senate Bill S-238). CCL Canada is not a large NGO with a massive mailing list. Instead, the organization focuses on helping volunteers build political will locally through transformational, in-person interactions not digital transactions. Yet, thanks to these grassroots efforts, this has become CCL Canada’s most signed open letter ever. CCL volunteers respectfully asked Senators to give CAFA careful consideration and pass it to the House of Commons promptly. The letter emphasized that enacting CAFA would: For nearly three years, CCL volunteers have worked alongside Senator Rosa Galvez and more than 120 civil society organizations to advance policies that align Canada’s financial system with climate realities. CAFA would require banks and Crown corporations to develop climate action plans, set emission reduction targets, ensure board-level climate expertise, and hold institutions accountable for climate-related financial risks. “This is not radical; it is inevitable,” said Senator Galvez in October 2025 when she re-introduced the bill. “Voluntary pledges have failed to shift capital at the scale and speed required. CAFA is the next logical step to protect Canadians, our economy, and our climate.” In December 2025, CCL Canada hosted a virtual call with Senator Rosa Galvez to provide an update on CAFA and answer questions from volunteers. The session drew 99 registrants and has since been viewed almost 250 times online. CCL Canada’s Senate Action Team plans to continue mobilizing volunteers over the next six months to advance CAFA and other climate-aligned financial policies.
