LASER TALK: China is outperforming Canada on Clean Energy and Carbon Pricing

China is outperforming Canada on Clean Energy and Carbon Pricing

Did you know that in 2025 Canada’s share of emissions covered by a carbon price dropped from 82% to 43%, while China expanded its emissions trading system from 33% to 59%?  (London School of Economics)

CCL Canada members have known for some time that China has also become the world’s first “electrostate”. An electrostate is a country or region whose economy and energy system are primarily powered by electricity, often generated from low-carbon or renewable sources, rather than fossil fuels. In other words, it emphasizes electrification as the backbone of the state’s energy and industrial systems.

Carbon pricing is not the only tool we need, but without it, transitioning our economy away from fossil fuels becomes far more difficult. Right now, Canada is moving backwards on carbon pricing.

The climate crisis is also a financial crisis. We face the dual challenge of a trade war that threatens Canada’s economy and fossil fuel companies that cannot be trusted to act responsibly. That is why CCL Canada focuses its lobbying on taking money directly out of fossil fuel companies’ hands through industrial carbon pricing and promoting climate-aligned finance.
